'My Fair Lady' tells the story of Professor Higgins, a leading English phoneticist and who, along with his colleague Colonel Pickering, set out to transform a cockney girl, Eliza Doolittle, into a proper-speaking lady. Higgins and Colonel Pickering initially seem to make no progress but eventually after a break through (The Rain in Spain) they decide to test the girl by taking her to the horse track for a social event with Higgins’ mother’s snobbish guests and eventually to a full-dress Embassy ball. Even after Eliza amazes everyone and even impresses Karpathy, a European phonetics expert, they still treat Eliza as a mere experiment and not as a human being. When Eliza runs away, Higgins realizes that she is more than just an experiment; indeed he is in love with the girl.
