Backdrops for Mikado backdropsMikado begins with the return of the Mikado’s son Nanki-Poo, disguised as a travelling minstrel. Nanki-Poo arrives in Titipu because he has fallen in love with Yum-Yum. He is told by Pooh-Bah, the corrupt local official and a nobleman named Pish-Tush, that Yum-Yum is to be married to Ko-Ko, Yum-Yum’s guardian and the Lord High Executioner, who all the while is also slated to be executed himself due to violating the Mikado’s law against flirting. Nanki-Poo despairs over the news of Yum-Yum and Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko receives a letter from the Mikado stating that an execution must take place within the month or he will lose his title, so once he hears of Nanki-Poo’s desire to commit suicide he makes a deal with Nanki-Poo that he and Yum-Yum may marry if he agrees to be executed after one month. Nanki-Poo agrees. Suddenly Katisha, an elderly woman of the court whom Nanki-Poo is slated to marry arrives. She recognizes Nanki-Poo and tries to reveal his true identity. After she is driven away from Titipu, she rushes off to find the Mikado to notify him of his son’s return. As Yum-Yum prepares to be married, Ko-Ko comes to her and tells her of a shocking law he has discovered that states when a married man is executed, his widow must be buried alive. Yum-Yum calls off the wedding after hearing this dreadful news. Ko-Ko must still find someone to be executed or he will be the one being executed. Nanki-Poo suggests that Ko-Ko write a false affidavit stating that Nanki-Poo was executed, and then allow he and Yum-Yum to be married and leave the country forever. Ko-Ko agrees. Mikado arrives at Titipu with Katisha. Ko-Ko believes Mikado has come to verify that an execution has taken place, not that he is actually come to find his son. Ko-Ko begins to describe the execution to Mikado. The Mikado, enraged, declares that he and Pooh-Bah are guilty of killing the “heir apparent”, and the only way for them to be saved is if Nanki-Poo returns. Nanki-Poo hesitates to return because he fears Katisha will call for his execution after she hears of his marriage. Ko-Ko must woo and marry Katisha, so as to make so that she will have no claim on Nanki-Poo. All are reconciled as they celebrate Nanki-Poo’s marriage to Yum-Yum and Ko-Ko’s marriage to Katisha. |
